Associate or Director

We are seeking a driven, self-motivated patent lawyer to join IPXI’s patent quality vetting and transaction team as an Associate or Director, depending on experience and qualifications.

The Associate or Director position will involve daily contact with third-party patent owners and inventors, including their inside and outside counsel, for the review of high-quality patent rights from a diverse set of technology areas. The position will also work integrally with IPXI’s business development and market analysis teams to develop an understanding of licensable value, and to help create quality deliverables conveying such value for the third-party patent owners and the IPXI Selection Committee. Finally, the position will work integrally with IPXI’s ULR Contract transaction team to help develop offering memorandums and other materials for the marketing and sales of ULR Contracts.

The position will be located in Chicago.

ASSOCIATE or DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Managing and conducting patent diligence, including claims analysis, prosecution history analysis, infringement analysis, and coordinating efforts with third-party patent service providers.
  • Facilitating and leading diligence calls and meetings with corporate, university, laboratory, and independent IP owners, inventors and counsel.
  • Determining preliminary IP licensable value, including market potential analysis and assisting with license revenues projection model drafting (strong Microsoft Excel skills a plus)
  • License review and drafting.
  • Drafting and execution of offering memorandums, letters of intent, membership agreements, and proposal letters.
  • Researching and drafting client-distributed support memorandums regarding legal, economic, tax, and general business issues associated with execution and maintenance of an IP exchange.
  • Originating and managing relationships with top corporate, laboratory and university IP-owners.
  • Identifying and executing value-added programs and ideas for maintenance of the Exchange and its quality vetting procedures.
ASSOCIATE or DIRECTOR REQUIREMENTS:
  • Technical bachelors degree and JD with superior academic credentials.
  • At least 3 years legal experience in intellectual property law at a national or regional law firm and/or in-house, including patent litigation, patent prosecution, and patent licensing.
  • At least one state bar admission.
  • Excellent organizational, critical thinking, problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • High attention to detail required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required; must be comfortable working with a small internal team and actively participating in conference calls and in-person meetings with IP executives and legal counsel.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including ability to conduct one-on-one and one-on-multiple meetings.
  • Energetic with an enthusiasm for entrepreneurial endeavors.
  • Must believe in IPXI’s mission to provide transparency and efficiency to the IP licensing market.
  • Must be willing to travel.
In addition, the following qualities are a plus:
  • Registered patent agent
  • Experience as USPTO patent examiner.
  • Experience in drafting infringement and validity opinions.
  • Knowledge of IP market and the interplay of its many participants and service providers.
  • Knowledge of finance and exchange concepts, including investment terminology.
  • Experience with financial models.
  • Enthusiasm for publishing articles and speaking at seminars.
